Climate

The inland has a mild continental character what means low temperatures in winter (under 0°C, max.–10°C, in Podgorica- an average temperature in January 5°C) and quite high temperatures in summer (Podgorica- an average temperature in July (26.4°C). The Montenegrin coast has a Mediterranean climate, as well as the coastal regions of the neighbouring countries, and it is characterized by the long, hot and dry summer and short, mild and rainy winter. In winter, an average temperature is about 9°C, the temperature under zero is an exception. In summer, there is a typical extraordinary length of the sunshine (2500 hours a year), a high number of the sunny days (in summer months 300 hours a month) and a low cloud amount. The average temperatures in July are around 28°C, but the higher temperatures are not an exception, they may reach even 40°C. It is because of the mountain wall which mostly arises shortly next to the coast and it is providing perfect protection against the unfavourable influences for the coast. The average temperature on the Montenegrin coast is high in the summer, as well as in the winter months thanks to these favourable conditions.

The climate affects sea, its temperature in July is around 25°C.

The weather is strongly influenced by the frequent winds:

  • Bóra – north-eastern, in the winter it arises the waves
  • Jugo- south-eastern –it causes huge waves
  • Mistral – north-western, it refreshes in the warm summer months
  • Nevera – western wind bringing the storms, it pleasantly cools the air

The temperatures in the summer months may reach even 38 °C.

For example: in Podgorica the average temperature reaches 26.4 °C in July, while at the coast it is above 28°C on average.

Cloudiness

From the northwest towards the southeast the cloudiness is getting lower, while an average annual cloud amount in the north is 10% higher than in the south what represents 47%. The two summer months tend to be continually cloudless and bright. The cloudiness is very rare, but it is possible that one or two days will be cloudy. The highest cloud amount is usually in spring. The minimum of rainfalls is in July and August, the maximum falls in November and December. For example, Ulcinj receives an average of 1300 mm of rain per year, while Herceg- Novi receives 2000 mm. The summer rains are usually very short, but very intensive.

The mountain range, which towers above the coast (especially above Bay of Kotor, concretely Krivošije and Orjen), ranks among Europe's rainiest places- next to the village of Crkvice an average annual rainfall of 5300 mm has been recorded.

In the mountains there is no only a surface stream, the rainfalls disappear underground- in the cracks, holes and so on.
